Reflecting on the ‘O Antiphons’ of Advent
Advent can become the ‘lost season’ when we get distracted by the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and parties. Yet there is an invitation given to us by the Scripture readings of the Advent Season to be still and calm, and to enter into a spirit of preparation for the Christmas celebrations. Advent helps us to recall the first coming of Christ two thousand years ago but also to prepare for the fulfilment of his promise to return in glory.
This year, the Priory Institute offers a retreat based on the ‘O Antiphons’ of Advent which were composed in the sixth or seventh century to accompany the Magnicat Evening Prayer for the last seven days of Advent. More recently they have been used as Gospel acclamation verses in the celebration of Mass. A team of presenters will guide participants through a series of reflections on these great 'O Antiphons' during the second part of Advent from 17th to 23rd December.
Each antiphon begins with a title for Christ, taken from the prophet Isaiah:
17 December: O Sapientia (O Wisdom)
18 December: O Adonai (O Lord)
19 December: O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse)
20 December: O Clavis David (O Key of David)
21 December: O Oriens (O Dayspring)
22 December: O Rex Gentium (O King of the nations)
23 December: O Emmanuel (O God With Us)
We incorporate the ‘O Antiphons’ in our Advent preparation by including them in our
prayers or Scripture readings on the appropriate day.
This retreat will be offered entirely online with one reflection per day beginning with an introduction on 16th December and ending on Christmas Day itself, comprising ten reflections in all.
Reflections will be available cumulatively as the retreat progresses.
€40, €30 Priory Institute Students/Alumni and unwaged. Group rates are available on request.
Registration must be complete by 13th December.
All are welcome
